I aimed to explore sacred geometry and the mesmerizing patterns found in traditional Middle Eastern art and architecture. The core of the composition is a stylized 10-pointed star, evoking the radial symmetry and mathematical precision that underpin such timeless motifs.

The artwork takes the striking form of an elongated teardrop or ogee arch silhouette. This distinctive shape, featuring a curved pointed apex, is a hallmark of that era’s architecture, gracing the portals of those Holy places. By employing this culturally resonant outline as the framework for the intricate geometric patterning within, the piece establishes an immediate connection to the rich artistic heritage of that era.

Meticulously crafted from wood, likely using laser-cutting techniques for utmost accuracy, the star unfolds through increasingly elaborate tiers. Each successive layer introduces more complex geometric patterning – diamonds, stars, hexagons and triangles interlace to create a captivating tapestry.

At the heart of this composition lies an 10-pointed star, a ubiquitous symbol in Middle Eastern art. This carries profound spiritual significance. It is a symbol of wisdom, divine protection, and the interconnectedness of all creation. By placing this sacred emblem at the center, the artwork invites the viewer to reflect on the unity underlying the manifest world’s diversity.

The choice of wood provides a warmth and organic quality. The natural grain harmonizes with the crisp geometry, grounding the ethereal design. Light plays across the varying heights and perforations, animating the static form with an interplay of shadow and illumination.

Conceptually, the inward journey from the periphery to the center represents a spiritual passage – a meditative path guided by the universal language of geometry and symmetry. The viewer is drawn into contemplation of the infinite, the divine order woven into the very fabric of existence.

In crafting this piece, I hoped to pay homage to the stunning artistic and intellectual traditions of the ancient Middle Eastern world while inviting modern audiences to lose themselves momentarily in its beauty and profound underlying meaning. The precision of the execution allows the purity of the forms to take center stage, connecting us to a design heritage both ancient and startlingly contemporary.
